Gunther's End Times
Kelsey discovered what we decided was the child of Sven and Gunther (think of the swans in the Public Garden). We named him Sventher. He has since disappeared to parts unknown.
More shockingly, Kelsey discovered a short while later a larger, winged ant with a broken leg, broken wing, and - amazingly - wearing a shell-shocked yet proud expression. It was Gunther!!!! We rescued him from the cold, hard floor and attempted to place him gently on the windowsill. He fell off onto our phone. I attempted a few times to feed him sugar crystals, but he stubbornly refused. In his food-deprived, weakened state, he tumbled off the phone and managed to crush himself under Kelsey's pen basket-thing. He was upside-down and struggling in vain to right himself. I convinced Kelsey to do the right thing and put our poor friend out of his misery. As I put away the sugar jug, Kelsey gently put him to sleep with a post-it note.
Rest in peace, little guy.
Interestingly, as I was writing about Gunther's last minutes on this earth, I discovered Sventher scaling the wall next to my desk! The youth still lives!!! Then he plummeted at least 2 1/2 feet to the floor. He is missing once again.
